Salient Gender Difference in the Wage Elasticity of General Practitioners' Labour Supply

چکیده
Recent years have witnessed a growing proportion of female general practitioners (GPs) worldwide. Because female GPs tend to work fewer hours than male GPs, this continuing trend may accelerate the shortage of GPs. This paper investigates the gender di erence in the wage elasticity of Australian GPs by maximum likelihood estimation of labour supply and wage equations. Quantitative information regarding the labour supply responses of GPs is vital in designing e ective policies. The results show salient gender di erence. An increase in hourly wage increases the labour supply of male GPs and reduces the labour supply of female GPs, resulting in an enlarged gender di erence in labour supply. The results also suggest that family factors still remain a key driving force of the reduced labour supply of Australian female GPs.

Estimating the Wage Elasticity of Labour Supply to a Firm: What Evidence Is There for Monopsony? In this paper we estimate the elasticity of the labour supply to a firm, using data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey. Estimation of this elasticity is of particular interest not only in its own right but also because of its relevance to the debate about the ...
متن کاملIs Child Work Necessary?
This paper investigates why children work by studying the wage elasticity of child labour supply. It is argued that a negative wage elasticity favours the hypothesis that poverty compels work whereas a positive wage elasticity would favour the alternative view that children work because the relative returns to school are low. Using data for 2400 households in rural Pakistan, we estimate structu...
متن کاملDeterminants of wages and labour supply in the UK
We explore characteristics of the UK labour market with special emphasis on explanation of the existing wage inequalities, determinants of participation and variation in the magnitude of hours of labour supplied among individuals. We explain up to 92 percent of variance in the wage rates from the supply side. Accuracy of the model is accounted by a variety of factors relevant to the labour mark...
متن کاملMeasuring links between labor monopsony and the gender pay gap in Brazil
This paper focuses on gender differences in job mobility and earnings for workers in Brazil. Monopsony theory suggests a link between the wage elasticity of labor supply and wage penalties. Should one group of workers be less elastic in their supply choices, that group is predicted to earn less than others. To measure wage elasticity, I estimate a hazard model on voluntary job separations using...

The paper quantitatively evaluates the interaction between capital-skill complementarity and endogenous low-, medium-, and high-skilled labour supply in generating wage inequality, using a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the Auerbach-Kotliko¤ (1987) type. The counterfactual analysis conducted shows that the German skill premium de ned by the 9 to 1 decile limit of earnings...
